1985 saw the world introduced to what would become one of the most recognisable film franchises ever: Back to the Future. The story, which continued in 1989 and 1990, follows Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and Dr Emmett L. Brown (Christopher Lloyd) as they time travel back to the past in their part of California in a specially designed car.

The three films had a total budget of $99 million and managed to gross almost 10 times that worldwide - a whopping $975.2 million. The Back to the Future series was nominated for five Oscars, winning one in the process.
